THE LORE

Endsville is the town that keeps ending.

Every few generations the city comes due and it ends - burned, flooded, buried, forgotten. Then somebody signs again, and a new Endsville is built on top of the old one. The ground under your feet is the paperwork of every Endsville before this one.

The Deed is the contract the First Clerks signed with the Underwriter, the thing under everything. The terms are simple: the city may stand; its people's names are the collateral. When a name is forgotten, the Underwriter collects. The Deed Office still files every name so nobody is forgotten. It is a full-time job.

The Operator keeps the city running. Nobody hired him. He works from a spire at the eastern edge - the Last Page - fixing things "by morning". It is always the same morning. He knows a third way out of the Deed, and he will not say it out loud.

The Margins are the sky. The Lamplighters worked out long ago that the Deed only covers what is on the line; anything above it is a note in the margin and nobody owns it. So they built up - towers, ropes, platforms that float. The sky is the only free place in Endsville.

The layers

  • THE MARGINStowers and floating ruins above the line
  • THE STREETthe current Endsville and its ten regions
  • THE FILINGsewers, cellars, catacombs - the dungeons
  • THE ARCHIVESthe drowned and burned towns of earlier Endsvilles
  • THE SMALL PRINTwhere the clauses live. crimson rock. veins.
  • THE VOID CLAUSEthe blank before the first word

The factions

  • The Deed Office - clerks, ink, filing. They want the Deed renewed.
  • The Lamplighters - keep the lamps, live up high. They want people to climb out.
  • The Unsigned - refused to sign. Outlaws of the Bonefields and the Veilmire. They want it torn up. Their leader has no name on file and therefore cannot be collected.
  • The Foundry - smiths and miners. They want to dig down to the Underwriter and invoice it.
  • The Salt Wardens - the coast. They remember the Endsville that drowned.

The ten regions, west to east

  1. SALTGRAVE COAST Salt marsh, a harbour town, the White Cliffs, the drowned graveyard and the sea at the end of the world.
  2. HOMESTEAD MARCHES Farms, a river, the windmill and the lanes where every door opens your house.
  3. ENDSVILLE CITY The Gate Plaza, Market Street, the Endsville Exchange, Guild Row and the Clocktower. You start here.
  4. ASHFIELD Burned fields, Soot End and its mine, the Ash Chapel and a hill that saw too much.
  5. WHISPERWOOD Old trees taller than towers, the Canopy village, and the Rotwood under the roots.
  6. CINDERREACH The Slagworks, the smokestacks, and the Chasm the forge was built to watch.
  7. THE BONEFIELDS A battlefield of giants. The road runs through their ribs. Ossuary Hold lives in one.
  8. THE VEILMIRE Violet water, stilt houses, and a chapterhouse that sank with its readers still reading.
  9. FROSTGATE PEAKS The highest ground in Endsville. Highwatch keeps the pass. The glacier keeps everything else.
  10. THE LAST PAGE Where the paper runs out. The Errata outpost, the Operator's Spire, and the way down to the Void.
The current Deed is due. Every region's quests build toward one choice at the Last Page: renew it, tear it, or find the Operator's third way and rewrite it - a route that only opens to those who collected the memory fragments of every layer.- THE DEED OFFICE WOULD LIKE YOU TO STOP READING NOW

Every resident, every mob and every page of this will live at wiki.endsville.online.
